Unboxing is a fascinating thing. You know the ritual that we all look forward to – the one right after we have gotten something new from the store?
It may surprise you to know that you are not the only one who gets excited about taking new things out of their boxes. In fact, there are a lot of people making a lot of money on videos of unboxing.
By a lot, I mean a lot – the highest paid YouTube star, for example, is a woman who unboxes Disney toys for a living. If there was ever a figure to prompt you to make a career change, it’s this one: in 2014, this 21-year old woman made $4.9 million in ad revenue alone. This does not include other deals she may have garnered.
So, yeah-unboxing is pretty popular. Those who choose to make a comfortable living out of it are proof of that.
The question that remains is “Why?”
Why are we so fascinated by taking things out of the box?
Why is a simple thing like making a video of taking a Disney toy out of its box such a good economic venture?
Here are 5 possible reasons why we think this is the case:
- It’s Transparent and Practical
You cannot trust what you see in the adverts or on display at the store, so what do you do?
Simple – get someone else to open theirs and you take a peek. Being able to see what you are actually getting makes the decision process a lot easier. Many of those who make videos of unboxing use special effects to spice up the video, but the fact remains that even in these augmented scenarios you can still see what you are getting.
For something that boasts the potential for such high rewards, they are very inexpensive to produce. Many of these videos last just a few minutes and require nothing more than a smartphone, after which, they are uploaded directly to YouTube. The entire process could take less than 30 minutes, and still rake in lots of views. They are basically home videos.
- The Concept is Incredibly Simple
We tend to overlook the power that lies in the simple things of life. For example, everybody remembers the warm fuzzy feeling we get inside when we open a new box and take out an item (think Boxing Day) but nobody has ever really tried to capture this. For all its success, unboxing merely scratches the surface of this phenomenon.
- Kids Love It
These videos are normally aimed at kids. In fact, many of these videos feature parents filming their kids as they unbox their toys. What happens then is a strange bonding effect that other kids who watch these videos experience with those they see doing the actual unboxing. Toy unboxing videos are great because kids get to experience the opening just as if they were opening the toys themselves,” said a FluffyJet spokesperson.
- The “IT” Factor
It’s the same with everything that goes on to be a viral success – the IT factor – something intangible which we cannot explain but can feel. The fact is, it is difficult to say what makes unboxing videos so popular, but the same could have been said about Barney and the Teletubbies.
